Water metering is the process of measuring water use. In many developed countries water meters are used to measure the volume of water used by residential and commercial buildings that are supplied with water by a publicwater supply system.
House and bulk water meters are designed for high flow rates. The house water meters are sophisticated, robust and durable multi-jet impeller meters. Bulk water meters are Woltman meters which offer outstanding measuring accuracy even under extreme conditions.
If your meter is outside the best way is to pour warm water onto the meter glass – this provides warmth and often clears the condensation. Also, gently tapping the glass can clear the droplets of water enough to read the meter.
What size is the typical residential water meter? Most homes require the smallest meter available, which is 5/8 x 3/4 inches. Some residences may require a larger meter because of added volume and pressure requirements, such as for lawn irrigation.
Water meters measure cubic feet of water used. To convert cubic feet to gallons, multiply the number of cubic feet by 7.48. CCWD measures water use by units for billing purposes: 1 unit of water billed = 100 cubic feet = 748 gallons.
