One type of valve commonly used to control water flow to fire sprinkler systems is known as an OS&Y gate valve. OS&Y means “outside stemand yoke” or “outside screw and yoke”. OS&Y gate valves operate by opening and closing via a gate, which lowers into or rises out of the valve.
Rising–stem valves are those valve designs that are operated by pushing or pulling the valve stem. … The most common rising–stem valve designs are gate valvesand globe valves.
OS&Y gate valve is developed to be used as the cut off and zone control valves in order to substitute supervisory switched butterfly valves in the fire security systems. Just to make them visible and traceable inside the systems, they are preferred to be used with post indicators instead of wheels. Valves could be commanded to get on/off by using post indicators and the valve positions could and traced. These valves also suitable for indoor and outdoor applications.
Disadvantages: Not smaller than the other valves, and non-economic.
Advantages; Smaller than the pressure cut and reducing valves and more economic than other valves.
