The goal of the inspection is to identify defects. Commonly inspected work products include software requirements specifications and test plans. … For example, if the team is inspecting a software requirements specification, each defect will be text in the document which an inspector disagrees with.

During inspection the documents are prepared and checked thoroughly by the reviewers before the meeting. It involves peers to examine the product. A separate preparation is carried out during which the product is examined and the defects are found. The defects found are documented in a logging list or issue log.

The stages in the inspections process are: Planning, Overview meeting, Preparation, Inspection meeting, Rework and Follow-up.
