GRINDING&CUTOFF

Grinding wheels with diamond or CBN grains are called superabrasives.

Category:

Grinding wheels with diamond or CBN grains are called superabrasives. Grinding wheels with aluminum oxide (corundum), silicon carbide, or ceramic grains are called conventional abrasives. A grindstone is a round sharpening stone used for grinding or sharpening ferrous tools. Grindstone machines usually have pedals for speeding up and slowing down the stone to control the sharpening process.

Friable grit breaks down more easily and is useful for cutting harder materials. Grit size typically runs from coarse (16 -24 grit), medium (36 – 60 grit) and fine (80-120grit). Superfine grits run from 150 and higher. Grinding wheels usually will be between 24 and 100 grit.

Silicon carbide is an abrasive used for grinding gray iron, chilled iron, brass, soft bronze and aluminum, as well as stone, rubber and other non-ferrous materials. Ceramic aluminum oxide is the newest major development in abrasives. This is a high-purity grain manufactured in a gel sintering process.

The wheels are designed for Struers machines, taking into consideration the most recent developments in wet cutting techniques. Various abrasives are used for the cutting of different materials. However, Al2O3 or SiC in a resin bond is used forcutting most metals.

A grinding wheel is a self-sharpening tool composed of discrete abrasive grains held together by a bonding agent with composite structure of many clearance allowance for the cutting edges. The characteristics of a grinding wheel depends upon the combined elements of abrasive, grit size, grade, structure and bond.
