A grindstone is a round sharpening stone used for grinding or sharpening ferrous tools. Friable grit breaks down more easily and is useful for cutting harder materials. Grit size typically runs from coarse (16 -24 grit), medium (36 – 60 grit) and fine (80-120grit). Superfine grits run from 150 and higher. Grinding wheels usually will be between 24 and 100 grit.
Silicon carbide is an abrasive used for grinding gray iron, chilled iron, brass, soft bronze and aluminum, as well as stone, rubber and other non-ferrous materials. Ceramic aluminum oxide is the newest major development in abrasives. This is a high-purity grain manufactured in a gel sintering process.
